Are you interested in starting a garden at home? Curious to learn how to grow cold-season fruits and vegetables into the fall? Are you unsure where to start, or even how to garden? Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County is excited to have received a grant from NY Ag and Markets to be able to offer free garden box kits this summer to families within the Whitney Point, Susquehanna Valley, Harpursville, and Windsor school districts.*
The garden kits are compact growing containers ready to go with soil, seeds, and tools to be able to plant a salad garden. The focus of the garden will be on growing fresh fruits and vegetables into the cooler fall season. Each Earth Box® kit includes $100 worth of tools and materials. They are small in size, and perfect for a back patio, porch, or those who either have limited space or do not want a large garden! Each family or address is eligible for one garden kit.
Each family will also receive support from CCE Broome and Ag in the Classroom to help make the most of their garden. There will be info guides to help you plant, grow, and cook the vegetables you grow! CCE staff will also be available to answer questions, and will be hosting virtual zoom meetings to troubleshoot any gardening problems, as well as youtube videos to help guide you along the way. In addition, nutrition staff at CCE Broome will be hosting a fun virtual cooking show in September to help you learn new ways to cook and eat your garden fresh produce!
Garden box kits will be ready to pick up in August, and participants will receive information on convenient pick up locations at school meal pick-up sites. There will be a zoom call in August and cooking demo in September for participants.**
