There are millions of plants. They all look a little different. Can you name a plant that you see around your home?
All plants have 6 plant parts. Each plant part has a job to keep the plant healthy. It helps the plant grow. Can you name all 6 plant parts?
The 6 plant parts are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
Roots help keep the plant in the ground. They also help to get water and nutrients (plant food!) from the ground. Roots are like our feet.
Stems help move the water and nutrients through the plant. It also helps hold the plant up! Many leaves will grow off the stem. Stems are like our spine, or backbones.
Leaves do an important job. They help turn sunlight into food, or energy, for the plant... really! The process of turning sunlight into food is called photosynthesis. Leaves help create food and energy for the plant, just like the food that we eat that give us energy.
Flowers help create more seeds for the plant. Without seeds, we would not be able to have most plants.
Fruits help grow and protect seeds. Most seeds grow inside of fruits. Think of fruits as a suitcase for the seeds.
Seeds help grow more plants. Some plants do not need seeds to grow more of themselves, but most do.
Think you can remember all of those plants? Look below for a coloring sheet challenge. Have an adult help you print out the coloring sheet and label each part on the plant. Color the sheet when you are done. Get creative! Do you know what color most strawberries are?
